Old captains, new crew. More than 40 new fellows attended our onboarding event on Saturday. By explaining everything from lean Monday to the big picture we made sure that everyone is ready to face the challenge. Now let’s steer the course and explore new horizons together!

Onboarding

In the interview Lukas Radwan summarises our 2016 kick-off and explains what we are up to next.

What did you want to achieve with the kick-off event?

The kick-off was the beginning of an exciting journey. The Junior Fellows are on board now and we shared our route and the organisation of our 100-days trip with them. We showed them what challenges and opportunities are in store for them in order to learn how entrepreneurship and innovation work. We hope that the Junior Fellows take this chance and push their innovation ideas forward as they certainly have the potential to change healthcare. We are very happy to have great participants with a big range of professional backgrounds: physics, computer science, engineering, sport science, neuroscience, psychology, business etc.

Please give a short summary for everyone who could not attend the onboarding! Who was on stage? What were the key messages?

First of all I introduced the building blocks of our MedTech Startup School and the general organisational processes. During the introduction I recognised the big enthusiasm of all participants to be part of this great journey The Junior Fellows are very motivated to make a difference! Next Christoph presented five preselected projects and initial teams were built around them. This year we, again, have some teams who came up with their own projects. They take the chance to be part of our system and push their startup ideas forward. Then Nils gave an introduction to the Lean Approach. That makes absolutely sense in an academic context in which hypothesising and empirical testing are well-known steps to deepen the understanding of something we explore. And last but not least, Daniel introduced the Business Model Canvas and the concept of the Lean Mondays.

What was your highlight?

My personal highlight was Sean Branagan´s Pep Talk. He works at the Syracuse University, NY in the field of entrepreneurship and has a unique way of motivating the Junior Fellows to be tough and brave.

This was just the beginning of everything. What can the participants look forward to in near future?

I hope that our Junior Fellows will be tough enough to walk the rocky road to Demo Day at October 17th! Their next step will be to attend the Hospital Immersion Days. Here the participants accompany medical doctors during their daily routine. From July 22nd to 24th we will host a MedTech Boot Camp with effectuation workshops and outdoor team building. I´m sure this will be great fun! Yes, and then it becomes serious: The Lean Mondays start with different units such as practical exercises and mentor speed dating. We have great mentors this year, but that´s another topic…
