The Medical Innovations Foundation (Stiftung für Medizininnovationen) is a non-profit foundation. Its main goal is to serve as a vehicle for the very early stage development of innovative solutions that address selected clinical and research needs that doctors and scientists working at the university hospital have identified.
In order to reach this goal the Medical Innovations Foundation founded a full subsidiary, the Medical Innovations Incubator GmbH. The incubator’s function is that of a “company builder”: Leading each innovation project the incubator assembles teams of engineers and MBAs around the doctors. Working with the university and hospital IP transfer offices, it also provides the doctors and scientists working at the university and the hospital with basic information on business issues. That includes knowledge about how to apply for the relevant patents, acquire seed funding, build a working prototype, and how to develop and validate a viable business model in the real world.
At the end of the incubation process a successful project will have a team, a product and a pilot customer. In short, it will be ready to turn into a real company that’s attractive for private investors to take on and that will build the products to help patients, doctors, and scientists make healthcare better.
